Soccer Training Session Plan for 8 Players

A complete session for 8 players with rondo, central combinations, pressing and high-intensity 2v2 games.

session planning8 playerssmall group trainingsmall-sided games

Quick answer: An 8-player soccer training session runs best in 75-90 minutes: a 15-minute rondo warm-up, two focused main blocks (27 minutes total), and a 20-minute small-sided game finale. With 8 players you can run pure 4v4 games, central combination exercises, and high-intensity 2v2 formats - all with every player active. The complete session is below.

Why 8 Players Works Well for Training

Eight players is a realistic number for most youth and amateur teams mid-week. It's enough to run meaningful positional exercises and small-sided games - and small enough that every player gets far more ball contact than in an 11-a-side session.

The key is not adapting drills meant for larger groups. The session below uses four exercises built natively for 8 players, so nothing feels improvised.

Total: ~70 minutes (extend main blocks to reach 90 if needed)

Session theme: Central combinations -> pressing as a unit -> high-intensity finishing.

Phase 1 - Warm-Up: 4v2 Rondo (15 min)

This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

4v2 Rondo

Players: 6 active + 2 rotating in every 2 minutes

Setup: One grid, 8x8 meters. 4 players on the outside, 2 defenders in the middle. The remaining 2 players wait on the side and swap with 2 outside players every 2 minutes.

How it works:

  • Outside players keep possession with a maximum of 2 touches
  • 2 defenders press inside the grid to win the ball
  • A pass that splits both defenders earns the attacking team a point
  • When a defender wins the ball, they swap with the player who lost it
  • Waiting players rotate in on a fixed timer - nobody waits more than 2 minutes

Progression (minute 10): Drop to 1 touch for outside players. The split-pass earns 2 points.

Coaching focus: Open body shape before receiving, scanning early, communication between outside players.

Phase 2 - Main Block 1: 3v3+4 Central Combination with Overloads (15 min)

This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

3v3+4 Central Combination with Overloads

Players: 8 (exact)

Setup: Central zone with 4 overload players positioned outside the pitch. 3 attacking players vs 3 defenders inside.

How it works:

  • Attacking team: 3 players work in the central zone, supported by 4 outside players. Objective is to combine with an outside player to complete a 3-player sequence and earn a point
  • Defending team: 3 players are locked in the central zone. If they win the ball, they must carry it by dribbling and score in either goal
  • Outside players are always available - the attacking team must use them to unlock combinations

Why it works for 8: This is one of the best drills you can run in an 8-player soccer training session. The 4 outside overloads mean the attacking team always has options, which keeps the rhythm high and forces the defending 3 to press as a coordinated unit rather than individually.

Progression: Limit outside players to 1 touch. Reward combinations that use 2 different outside players in the same sequence with 2 points.

Coaching focus: Third-man movement, using the outside overloads intelligently, immediate counter-press when losing possession.

Phase 3 - Main Block 2: 4v4 Multi-Goal Small-Sided Game (12 min)

This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

4v4 Multi-Goal Small-Sided Game

Players: 8 (exact)

Setup: Pitch with 3 mini-goals on each end line. Two end zones are marked near each goal line.

How it works:

  • Attacking team (4): Combine to score on any of the 3 mini-goals on the opponent's end line. Two end zones are marked - entry into these zones can be restricted or used as a scoring condition
  • Defending team (4): Press to win the ball and transition immediately to attack the 3 mini-goals on the opposite end
  • Roles switch instantly on every turnover

Why it works for 8: Three target goals per end force the attacking team to constantly scan and switch play - there's no single defensive position that covers all options. The result is an intense, fast 4v4 with constant decision-making under pressure.

Suggested condition: A goal scored after entering an end zone counts double. Forces attacking players to drive forward rather than shooting from distance.

Coaching focus: Pressing as a unit of 4, switching play to exploit open goals, transition speed after winning the ball.

Phase 4 - Small-Sided Game: 2v2 Small-Sided Game x2 (20 min)

This drill is in the CoachPage drill library.

2v2 Small-Sided Game

Players: 8 (two simultaneous games of 4)

Setup: Two identical small pitches side by side. Each pitch runs a 2v2 game simultaneously.

How it works:

  • Attacking team (2): Maintain possession and score on the goal at the far end
  • Defending team (2): Press to win the ball and attack the opposite goal immediately on recovery
  • On recovery, the defending team transitions to attack instantly - no reset

Why it closes this 8-player soccer training session well: After a session focused on combination play and pressing as a unit, the 2v2 format puts those skills in the most demanding possible context - 1v1 pressing, individual decision-making in tight space, and pure finishing. Small pitch, high intensity, every touch matters.

Run as: 4-minute periods with a 1-minute rotation. Swap players between pitches each period to mix matchups.

Coaching focus: 1v1 defending body position, attacking with pace after recovery, finishing under pressure.

Adapting This Session for Different Scenarios

If you end up with 9 or 10 players: Add 1-2 players as floating neutrals in Phase 2 or Phase 3. For a full 10-player session plan, see Soccer Training Session Plan for 10 Players.

U10-U12: Enlarge grids by 30%, remove touch restrictions, shorten phases by 5 minutes. Focus on ball contact and fun.

U13-U16: Enforce 2-touch maximum in Phases 2 and 3. In Phase 4, add a provocation rule - the defending team must press within 3 seconds of losing the ball or concedes a free point.

Adults / senior amateur: Shrink pitches, demand 1 touch in Phase 2, make Phase 4 pure intensity with no conditions - just fast, competitive 2v2.

FAQ

Can I run this session with fewer than 8 players?

Yes. For 6 players: replace Phase 2 with a second 4v2 Rondo set, and run Phase 3 as a single 3v3 game. For 7 players, add yourself as a floating neutral in Phase 2.

What if I end up with more than 8 players?

For 10 players, the soccer training session plan for 10 players uses three drills designed natively for that group size. For 9, add a neutral joker in Phase 3.

How much space do I need for this session?

Phases 1-3 work in a 30x25m area. Phase 4 needs two small pitches - 15x10m each works well, giving you a 30x10m total footprint.

Do I need goals for this session?

Mini-goals make Phase 3 and 4 much better. If you don't have them, use 4 cones per goal (2 per post). You need 4 mini-goals total, or 16 cones.

How do I plan my sessions more efficiently?

Most coaches spend 20+ minutes per session planning what should take 5. CoachPage has a session builder, the full drill library, and PDF export - choose age and focus, tweak the session, and the plan is ready before you leave the house.
